Dubai Hospital is a 912-bedded, international JCIA accredited government hospital located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is regulated by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). It was built in 1977 and started admitting patients in 1983. The hospital comprises numerous specialized departments and clinics. Our General Surgery Department consist of Bariatric Surgery-, Breast Surgery-, Hernia Surgery-, Endocrine Surgery- and General Surgery Teams.

The Bariatric Surgery Unit was established in October 2012, since then over 1000 primary- and complicated redo bariatric surgeries were performed with increasing tendency. Our surgical profile includes laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RNY), revisional surgeries, like: conversion of sleeve gastrectomy to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, conversion of gastric banding to RNY, banded bypass (with adjustable or non-adjustable band), pouch resizing, gastrojejunal sleeve resection, blind loop resection, sleeve resizing, removal of gastric band, reversal of RNY or mini gastric bypass; antireflux procedures: cruroplasty, Nissen fundoplication and management of bariatric surgery emergencies. The morbidly obese patients are always managed and followed-up by our Multidisciplinary team, including: Clinical Nutritionist, Psychologist, Gastroenterologist, Endocrinologist, Pulmonologist, Cardiologist, Sleep Medicine physician.. etc. For training purposes we are having surgical sessions in cooperation with Dr. Bruno Dillemans visiting surgeon from Bruges, Belgium 6-8 times per year.

Our Bariatric Surgery Team is actively involved in academic activities, conferences, scientific research, continuous audit of our outcome with long-term follow-up, publications, international training and involvement in fellowship programs. We are active participants and presenters of monthly held international BARIALINK Obesity Academy case discussions.

Our future plan is to become a Center of Excellence (accredited by IFSO, COE program) within 6 months. We will start live surgery transmissions from Dubai and we are planning to organize in Dubai Hospital international workshops and courses, including: “Improving basic surgical skills”, “Advanced bariatric surgery skills/redo surgeries”, “Junior courses in animal lab”.
